Benagil Cave boat tour from Lagos - inside view with sunlight streaming through ceiling

Best Time to Visit Benagil Cave from Lagos

The Benagil Cave is one of the most photographed natural wonders in Portugal. As a Lagos-based boat charter company, we've taken thousands of guests to this stunning sea cave. Here's everything you need to know about timing your visit perfectly.

Best Months to Visit

The ideal time to visit Benagil Cave is between May and September when the Algarve enjoys warm weather and calm seas. July and August are the peak tourist months with the warmest water temperatures (around 22°C), perfect for swimming inside the cave. However, these months are also the busiest. For a balance between good weather and fewer crowds, we recommend June or September.

Best Time of Day

For photography, the magic happens between 10am and 12pm when sunlight streams through the cave's iconic "eye" (the circular opening in the ceiling), creating dramatic light beams on the sandy beach inside. Our morning Benagil Cave cruise from Lagos departs at 10am, perfectly timed to catch this natural light show.

Avoiding the Crowds

Benagil Cave gets extremely busy during peak season, especially with kayakers and paddleboarders who can enter the cave directly. The advantage of a private boat charter from Lagos is that we can time our arrival to avoid the biggest crowds. Early morning (before 11am) or late afternoon visits tend to be quieter.

Weather Considerations

Sea conditions matter more than air temperature. Calm seas are essential for a comfortable boat trip and for swimming near the cave. Southerly winds can create choppy conditions along this stretch of coast. We monitor weather carefully and will reschedule if conditions aren't suitable for a safe and enjoyable experience.

Why Start from Lagos?

Lagos offers the best of both worlds for a Benagil Cave visit. The 3.5-hour journey from Marina de Lagos takes you along the spectacular Ponta da Piedade cliffs, past countless hidden coves and sea stacks, before reaching Benagil. You'll see far more coastline than departing from closer towns like Carvoeiro or Portimão.
